Elvino Sousa

Elvino S. Sousa
was born in Graciosa, The Azores, Portugal on December 28, 1956. He
received the B.A.Sc. in engineering science, and the M.A.Sc. in
Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1980 and 1982
respectively, and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the
University of Southern California in 1985. Since 1986 he has been with
the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University
of Toronto. From 1986 to 1996 he held the ranks of Assistant and
Associate Professor and was also a Natural Sciences and Engineering
Research Council (NSERC) University Research Fellow. In 1997 he was
promoted to the rank of Full Professor. Since 1996 he has also been the
chair of the Communications Group.
He has performed research in spread spectrum systems since 1983. His
current interests are in the areas of spread spectrum systems, mobile
communications, and indoor wireless communications with emphasis on the
high level performance of the network and signal processing issues
affecting such a performance. At the University of Toronto he has
developed a graduate course in mobile communications and also teaches a
graduate course in error control codes and has developed a group working
in wireless communications (the wireless communications laboratory). He
has been invited to give lectures and short courses on spread spectrum
and wireless communications in a number of different countries. He was
also the technical program chairman for PIMRC 95.
Dr. Sousa is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of
Ontario, a member of the Communications, Computer, Vehicular Technology,
and Information Theory societies of the IEEE.
